09 Apr The Misunderstood Entrepreneur…Things Aren’t Always As They Seem
Have you ever wondered about entrepreneurs and what makes them do what they do?
Perhaps you have a friend who is an entrepreneur, and he can’t imagine not being in charge of his own destiny. Maybe you’ve questioned his sanity, especially knowing how risky starting a business can be. Or maybe you’re like me. You are an entrepreneur, someone who took a risk on an idea. And maybe you wish everyone around you understood you a little better.
In a recent Inc. article, Kevin Daum, a best-selling author and Inc. 500 entrepreneur, has some encouragement and validation for misunderstood trail blazers and vision-setters. And for those close to them, he offers explanation as to why they are so driven to be the authors of their own future.
“…Most successful entrepreneurs aren’t in it just for themselves. They love to bring other people along for the ride. Making others happy, wealthy and successful drives entrepreneurs. They create companies to benefit society with their products and services…Entrepreneurs know the only safety net they can bank on is their own ability to leverage knowledge, resources and relationships to build something from nothing. They believe there is greater risk in being boxed into a structure than to venture out to new horizons.”
Kevin Daum admits that although entrepreneurs tend to sound a little narcissistic in the way they talk about their ideas and visions, at the core of their seeming self-centeredness is benevolence. What drives them is being able to help people, to make life better for people, to add simplicity to people’s lives.
Why take the risk? According to Daum, entrepreneurs truly are committed to their vision and simply “evaluate risk differently.” In fact, he says, “most entrepreneurs don’t believe they are taking risks by opening businesses and growing companies.” They simply have that much faith in their vision.
