Notebook: Small business owners, employees need vacation days

Is it laziness to take a vacation? As Time.com reported over the summer, it's always a temptation to forgo vacations in favor of seeking opportunities. With New Year's approaching and many businesses understaffed, it can be a temptation to grind it out. But while there is nothing wrong with burning the midnight oil from time-to-time, that may not be the wisest thing to do. "When you’re running a small company, you’re by definition a problem-solver,” small business advisor Alice Bredin told Time. “Morning, noon and night you’re solving problems. It’s hard to do that well if you aren’t recharging your batteries.” Days off bring in candidates: Vacations are not only helpful for recharging batteries, but they also provide an added value for potential employees, writes Greg Furstner of HR Brain Bank. "A generous time off policy does more than just show your commitment to promoting good work/life balance," Furstner says.
